Glad it's all sorted now albeit in a roundabout way.
I have no idea why Garmin does not allow GPS's to be synced with Basecamp data - choose data in Basecamp and device should automatically synchronise when connected. They can do it with their smartwatches, why not with their GPS units?

You should have an option to calibrate (which involves spinning and rotating in a drunken bee dance arrangement) - this should resolve any magnetic compass issues.

I have an old Garmin Etrex Vista HCX. Garmin can no longer supply the topo maps for these units, they're outdated..
Does anyone have the Africa Rec Topo Maps on a sd card? I'd be happy to pay for it..

I have an old Garmin Legend and went through the same hassles you have with updating the map. Because of this I am still using the 2011 topo and rec map. It still works perfectly well and update it with my own tracks in the area I am going into before a hike.
I have seen a few posts of people switching to the free opencyclemap which also contains hiking tracks - it seems to have a lot of info in the Berg region. Check the map online and if suitable, it may be an option to download and use on your gps.

@Papa Dragon
Here is the link to the downloadable Africa topo map: www.gmaptool.eu/en/content/africa-osm-topo
Install it onto your pc and it will be available in Basecamp and you can use it like your other installed maps (open trails, transfer to gps, etc).
Hope this helps - as stated earlier I tried it but still prefer the old garmin topo maps, even though are out of date.

I have to agree with Peter. We are still running our 60CSX Garmin GPS that is now 10 years old with the topo maps of 2009 installed. I wonder about getting an upgrade but there is no real reason to and so far the maps are more than enough reliable. Coupled with the ablity to move tracks and waypoints from Google Earth and VE for example, I cant see any reason to upgrade until the are some more advances with the GPS's or Maps on offer.

Another option to improving the older Garmin topo maps is to look into installing track4africa onto them - gives a lot of detail of "off the beaten track" places.
PS - I have nothing to do with tracks4africa
