I think I am going to go with the Klymit Static V.

@JulieMK, I consider 755g to be fairly heavy for a mat too. Adding to what Riaang was saying it all depends on what dimensions you are talking about, and what R value you are getting with it (which unfortunately isn't supplied with this) - and where you will be using it. If you are only going to use in SA then you could go lighter for sure. Ultimately its also about how much you want to spend.

For most seasons in the Berg I use a Thermarest NeoAir X Lite which is 368g (not self-inflatable). I also have an old Thermarest Prolite 4 at about 680g, which is self-inflatable, I think about 3.5cm thick, can't remember what the R value is since the newer Prolites are not the same. It is a proper 4 season pad though and I use it for camping on snow in Canada and have also used it in the Himalayas at high altitudes. My wife has a Big Agnes Insulated Air Core (not self-inflatable) which is almost 6cm thick, with an R value of 4.1 and weighs around 650g I think. I use it myself for camping on snow in Canada and it is very comfortable. By far the most durable has been the ProLite 4 which is 12 years old now, used heavily but has never been punctured. The other two mats are 5 years old or less, and I have punctured both already!

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

Just a word of caution from experience... some of the lighter/expensive mats make a crackling/squeaky noise when turning on the mat during the night, waking me up!! Maybe it does not worry some hikers but I go to the mountains for quietness during the night, except for Jackals which are cool!!

Thanks for the input everyone. It will definitely help in making a choice from our limited options here in SA. Unfortunately the Thermarest NeoAir X Lite retails for R2600, which is a little over the top for me. The JR Gear Traverse Core Mattress looks really good, but does it make a noise when moving around? I will check it out over the weekend. Never thought of inflatable as an option instead of self-inflatable

Agreed, if that is what the X Lite is going for these days that is pretty steep.

The rustling of the reflective foil inside the light pads that Richard mentioned is definitely something to consider - I didn't leap at the earlier models because of that. They are starting to improve on this and mine doesn't bother me. The other issue is that they are so darn light that the material is not strong and you have to handle it carefully to avoid puncturing - sleeping directly on a dusty floor without a ground sheet for example is not a great idea. If ultra light gear is prime for you, then it really is awesome otherwise - starting to compete with the weight of the dense foam mats but more comfortable.

Klymit Static-V is 514g, a Thermarest Neoair is 540g (neither is self inflating, though).

Self inflating mats are generally thinner, bulkier and heavier than air mats. They usually have decent R-Values, though. My Static-V is great, but only has an R-value of something like 1.4, while my NeoAir has an R-Value of 4.9 - so my NeoAir is basically my cold weather mat. Personally I would never go back to a self-inflating mat, but that's just me. The idea of a thinner, heavier mattress that takes up more space in my pack is not ideal! In my experience, at altitude, all a self-inflating mat really does is unfold itself

Yes and no...
Really depends on the mat, user and environment.
That Neo-Air is a really nice mat but about 300% more expensive. Ultimately depends on main use and budget.

The JR gear Traverse core doesn't have any crackling or irritating sounds to it. it gains its warmth from primaloft installed in the pockets, so no crackling material...

Can confirm the quiteness of the JR gear mat - my wife has one and it is not noisy. However, you will stil hear some noise when you turn around (I turn with my sleeping bag, not in it as it is a bit tight). Personally I find snoring from hiking buddies more noisy :P

That is, if I can hear them as I apparently snore quite loudly sometimes
