Mattresses / sleeping pads

Hi All,

Does anyone have advice or recommendations on what self-inflating hiking mattress to purchase ?

Many thanks.

Alan

I have just ordered the below mattress from First Ascent. Their Ultralight 5.5 mattress is not insulated enough for the Berg winters but will be fine for summers.
My existing Thermal Comfort mattress is too big and heavy so have decided to change it for the Ultra Insulated Mattress.

My suggestion - skip self-inflating (which means "inflated by self"), and go with an air mattress. You can get a Therm-a-Rest air mattress with an R-Value of around 4 that weighs 600g. It is a bit heavy, but it is more comfortable than a self-inflating mattress and is at least as warm. It takes a fraction of the amount of space in your pack.

I use a Neo-Air X-Lite, which has a low R-value, but only weighs 250g (4ft long one), and is only slightly bigger than a can. I used to use a Neo-Lite, which is the one I mentioned above. I switched out to the new one to save some weight.

I just got a Neo-Air X-Lite but haven't used it yet - have you used it in winter in the berg? Wondering how well it actually performs

Mine has worked very well so far. I have used it on a few hikes this winter, including sleeping in Giants Cave, Didima Cave and Twins Cave. I have been very happy with it so far. And having the 4ft option is perfect for me as everything from the knees up is on the matt, and it is very light, faster to inflate and easier to fold away.

Ghaz, can I be a pain and trouble you for a photo of it rolled up? You say it's the size of a can, keen to see if possible. It sounds good.

Hi Alan, I am merging your post with the existing thread for discussing sleeping pads. Have a look through the thread for some info that has already been posted.

One of my mats is a full-length NeoAir X Lite. It rolls up to about the size of a Nalgene water bottle. Its a 3 season mat which would be fine for a lot of Berg winter conditions. Certainly I have used it there in the winter. This won't be same for every person though, as everyone has a different experience in sleeping comfort. In Canada I only use it from about the end of June through to October when there is less camping directly on snow. I have used mine to sleep directly on snow during very warm summer conditions and it was OK.

It is a great mat, but does need to be handled carefully as it can puncture easily. This has happened to mine but it still works totally fine after some patching. The space blanket inside will probably eventually perish. I can see it start to do this in mine along the fold lines when I hold it up to the light. But this is after a good number of years of frequent use.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

Maybe slightly larger than suggested (750ml water bottle for scale) - but I will point out that the mattress is very loosely in that container. I think the container is the same for all sizes, so the 4ft version is nice and easy to get in there.

I have a full length and a 3/4 Thermarest NeoAir XTherm. I have slept on a glacier with it. I have had loads of pads but It is really the best. Warmth, weight, and comfort. Blowing it up is easy enough. I wouldn't use anything else.
