Mattresses / sleeping pads

Hey Riaang...yeah I'm sure it probably isn't too bad or else they wouldn't sell them...I just had a mate with a fully inflatable hiking mattress and it would take him a good 20mins to inflate once we got to camp...not something you want to do after 10hrs of hard hiking...although his was a fairly cheap Makro special so that probably explains it.

Just was google 'hiking mat pumps' for the fun and found those pump sacks...apparently, they are more aimed at avoiding moisture from your breath causing condensation on the inside of the mattress.

Anyone know if there's a difference between the JRGear red and blue? The red seems to be more expensive but I can't seem to find whether there's a spec difference or not..

Ok "red" ( www.duesouth.co.za/pdp/jr-gear-standard-mummy-mattress/_/A-194233AAAD2 )

794 grams, and an R-value of 2.5. DIMENSIONS 184 x 52 x 3.8cm

And then "blue" ( www.duesouth.co.za/pdp/jr-gear-traverse-core-mattress/_/A-194233AAAD4 )

570 grams and the R-value is not given. DIMENSIONS 183 x 51 x 8.9cm. Have to love the consistency of these Due South/Cape Union websites...

So the cheaper one is much thicker, but I would hazard a guess and say it's not as warm. JR Gears website is rubbish, and I couldn't even find the names of these products there.

Same weight as your "red" friend :P and slightly more expensive but a higher R-value:
www.mountainmailorder.co.za/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=2478

Otherwise here are more options to further confuse the matter:

Drifters Cape Town has a JR gear mattress for R1200 with an R-value of around 5. Not sure about colour but seems better buy than the Kway (no R-value afaik)

Seems like the 'blue' one - the Traverse Core - has an R-value of 5, according to this Swedish website: mattisblogg.se/2014/05/insulatet-traverse-core-uppblasbart-liggunderlag-testat/

Probably the same one that is at Drifters

Have been battling to find any JR mattress in stock, except for the self-inflating..

For the purpose of research, I have ordered this:
www.takealot.com/quechua-decathlon-forclaz-air-inflatable-hiking-mattress/PLID42973365

It's basically the same weight as my K-way compact self-inflating, if the manufacturer's weights are correct,
folds up smaller, and is a lot thicker.
Hopefully I'll get it in time for a hike on 16th, and I'll post a review after a couple of uses.

Anyone used one of these?

Hopefully it's not made of rice paper :silly: Let us know how it works out for you. It seems to be getting good reviews  And the price is sweet.

Thanks Sabine, I phoned City Rock, and they have the insulated JR Traverse Core at R1200.
I asked the guy if they have an online store, and he said yes, mountainmailorder.
The Traverse Core is not on the website though, and the phone number provided goes straight to fax.
(Maybe because it's Saturday afternoon)..
