Have fun...watch the river crossings, take rope at least.

Good initiative
I think the Hidden Valley is a great choice! I imagine you are shooting for that massive flat ground near the boulder field to pitch tents?
Hopefully the rivers are down - that crossing was brutal when I was there in December.
More initiatives like this are needed if children are to grow up with an appreciation for outdoors and natural beauty.

Hi Ghaz
Going up to a flattish area where a tributary joins the Mzimude River from the right. Just beyond that I was thinking of camping. I was there a few years back. Hopefully won't have to do river crossings using a rope with grade ones.
If my memory serves me correctly we also pass a big rock with a pool. Hoping kids could have a dip there.
Regards
Selous

@Selous: ok - I know where you are talking about, that's not far past the river crossing. I think that's the official start of the Hidden Valley according to the map. Lots of nice flat ground for the kids to run around in.
Dave G calls that "Puffadder Rock" - nice lunch spot on the river.

Hi Diverian
That's the one. I passed it a few years back after a long day hike in June and thought it looked magical and a great place for kids and families
Thanks a mil

Nice one!
I went on my first hike with a school group. Think it was in Standard 5 (back in the 80's)
We went to pillar cave.
Enjoy and I hope you get lots of life-long converts!

That big rock is a few hundred metres before the river crossing, which can be kinda hairy to cross when the river is up. There is not much flat ground around this rock as well. It is all on the other side of the river further up. The pictures don't lie. The big birds are up there watching you.

We crossed the river about a month ago. Required us to take our boots off, but wasn't particularly fast flowing. Possibly less water by now?

@Selous, great idea, I did the same with my son and his friend and dad last year (they were in grade 2), the boys had a blast, to the extent it will now be 4 dads and lads in July this year,
We camped the first night at Garden Castle and then took the boys to Pillar cave, we explored around the area for the day, although it was mid winter it was really warm.
Looking forward to my trip in July with my boy
Have a great time, send us a story.
