Overnight Berg hikes with kids
Otherwise maybe some of the closer caves around Didima.
There's also Sleeping Beauty, its not my favourite cave though

Smurf. When I spoke to the Officer who answered the phone at Garden Castle, he suggested that Sleeping beauty would be very much colder than Pillar, so with the kids at this time of the year, probably a less attractive alternative. Thanks again though.

Pillar Cave Annex is a great cave for kids,
If your kids are up for a decent hike, the hike up to Thamathu Cave at bushmans nek is definitely worth it, awesome outlook, you could literally take the day to get up there stopping reagularly to give them breaks.
It's about 7.7km from the border post.
I'm considering changing my July plan with my son to Thamathu Cave this year.

I wouldn't want to sleep in Sleeping Beauty Cave - but if you don't mind a short awkward scramble, there is the tiny engagement cave and ST's Waterfall Cave behind Sleeping Beauty Cave.
But the real winner and what would get my vote - if you can arrange permission and have a car that can handle not wonderful roads - try for Busingatha Cave (aka Singati Cave). The walkin is easy, the view is exceptional and there are literally plenty of really good rock pools (although not really a highlight this time of year I suppose).

I second this. Really easy hike.
I recently took my lighty there for his first overnight hike over Easter. He pretty much ran the whole way there and loved the cave experience. We started at 14h00 and were at the cave before 15h30 and then had a quick swim in that awesome pool, was rather fresh!

We can look at last year's historical data from the nearby Giant's Castle weather station to give you an idea of temps for that time of year:
Avg Minimum Temp 2013
September 7°C
October 8°C
November 10°C
