Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife has been obliged to closed the popular Mike's Pass 4x4 route at Cathedral Peak in the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site with immediate effect.

Consistently heavy rains have fallen in the area for many days, resulting in landslides on sections of the Pass.

 Does any body know if there is a shortcut up to the car park at the top of mikes pass from rainbow gorge, as the pass has been closed. Some how i don't want to be going up the camel in winter with the exposed ledges been in the shade and probably full of ice,or is it better just to walk up mikes pass all the way from didima it just seems like such a long way round.

I've dropped into Rainbow gorge several times from Mike's Pass (so the other way round). We parked in Mike's Pass opposite to where the path disappears into the forest for the first time having crossed the spur and descended into the river valley. We dropped down into the river from Mike's Pass and then up to the path. It took about 20 minutes max from the road to the path. Reverse direction would be slightly longer because the distance from the river to the road > river to path.

I have had confirmation this morning from Didima that the pass is once again open to vehicles. :woohoo: The cost is R70 per vechile. Transport to the top of Mikes Pass can also be arranged and is R70pp or minimum charge of R280

Excellent, thanks for letting us know Christine.

For the record, there is a direct hiking trail short-cutting the zig-zag section on Mike's Pass, for what it's worth. It re-joins the road further up. Also, I'm under the vague impression that Rainbow Gorge can be walked-out, though I've never gone further than the chockstone. That wouldn't be a huge help maybe, and probably not a great option for winter.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

I have just given Didima a call and they say that Mikes was never reopened? Anyone with some authority able to bring any clarity.

Thanks

We got a lift from the hotel to the top of Mikes Pass on 16th June 2011. They required that we sign an indemnity form. Not sure if people are allowed to take their own vehicles to the top of the Pass? The situation may have changed in recent weeks, as that was a month ago and also following the recent snowfall.

in October/November 2011 we found that the Didima people were willing to take us up in their vehicle. It's not open to private cars or 4x4s. It wasn't in bad condition actually, but perhaps the repairs aren't safe enough for the general public.
