Excuse the photo being out of focus - this is the side of the road.

Excuse the question, but does anyone know of the situation of Mike's pass at the moment? Are there any intentions of fixing it? are you allowed to walk up it?

I would guess that you can take a bike up...but best to phone Didima and ask them for the latest.

According to this write-up, it seems that Mikes pass is open- "Anyone with a 4×4 or vehicle with diff-lock can drive it, and you can get a permit from the Didima camp reception. "

Hi Yusufp,

Welcome to VE.

I think that the author of the year in the wild article is using a bit of journalist's licence, or received preferential treatment.

Mikes Pass has been open for a long time since the closure in 2011, but EKZNW no longer permits private vehicles to use Mike's Pass, not sure if that includes Mountain Club members going to Cambalala House or not.

EKZNW does, however, provide transport up and down Mikes Pass for hikers if prearranged. In June 2013 our group of 6 got a lift with EKZNW up Mike's Pass at the start of our hike for R50.00 per person. On our return we phoned Didima office, having pre arranged at our departure to do so, as soon as we had signal near the weather station and the vehicle took about half an hour to arrive at the top of Mike's Pass to give us a lift down, which cost R40.00 per person.

(Partially quoted from my related post on the 'Camel Route' topic.)

Hi All. Just phoned Didima to book a lift up Mikes Pass. It has just been closed even to their own vehicles due to the bad condition. So no lifts available up there. It is 23 April 2014.

Pity. We got a lift up (and down in horrible weather) in October 2013, made quite a big difference. The road wasn't great but not the worst I've ever seen or been on.

Isn't there a relatively new vulture hide up there? I wonder who will be hauling up bones etc on foot!!
