Injisuthi Pass
Moderator note: This thread was branched from "Rock" Passes vs. ROCK Passes
Hi guys, has anyone been up Injasuthi Pass recently and can provide any feedback on the conditions, length of time required etc?
I've read through this thread and seen the Intrepid's comment about taking 8.5 hours to the top from the Leslie's Pass campsite, which came as quite a surprise. Our original plan was to attempt the pass with light day packs and minimal climbing gear, while leaving our tents etc with a couple of people at the bottom of Leslie's Pass. After reading this thread however, maybe a trip up Injasuthi Pass across the top and back down Leslie's to our tents is a tad ambitious for one day?
Any thoughts/suggestions most welcome.

1) we had full packs on
2) we were not in a particular hurry
3) one member of our group took a nasty tumble which led to a concussion and cracked elbow (only found out afterwards) - so time was spent nursing him a bit, and though he continued, we had to take things a little bit slower.
Even if it took you 8 hours to get up, with 11-12 hours of daylight you could still pull it off.

We set off late last Friday evening, headed for Marble Baths Cave, arrived around 8pm in just under 2 and a half hours. On Saturday we overslept a bit and started later than I would've liked, leaving the cave at 7:15am. Made it to the campsite at the bottom of Leslie's Pass in a little under 2 hours. We quickly found a suitable spot, stashed our backpacks and headed off up Injisuthi Pass with day packs and a bit of climbing gear.
The pass turned out to be a genuine test of endurance; it's incredibly sustained, steep and involves quite a bit of scrambling over large boulders and up small waterfalls. It took a bit longer than anticipated and we eventually topped out around 3pm. We then picked up the pace across the summit to the top of Leslie's Pass, stopping just briefly to admire the view once or twice. One of the guys in our party was suffering with cramp (and slight sense of humor failure
Legs were certainly feeling a bit tender on the return trip to the car on Sunday, but a quick swim at Marble Baths always lifts the spirits.
Will post some pics when I get a chance.

Nice photos too. You have got me keen to finally tackle a pass that I thought I might not be able to do. I see you did use a rope on the last top section. Intrepid is that where your friend fell?

No he fell much further down. He was trying to circumnavigate one of the scrambly bits by traversing a slope which was not very solid. The ground gave way and he tumbled down the slope with his pack causing him to roll quite hard.Selous wrote: I see you did use a rope on the last top section. Intrepid is that where your friend fell?
I almost fell down the top section though. Did it unroped, with a full pack and a full climbing rope draped over my neck (admittedly not the smartest thing) and near the top I slipped and slid down probably only about half a meter before my hands caught the rock again. Good jolt of adrenalin.
