Not just "in the pipeline" anymore. The bridge over the Mnweni was under construction during our hike in December 2011 so should be complete by now?

This bridge was completed in December last year. Here is a pic, the road then carries on for aobut another km.

Tents should be fine if you are within the vicinity and have eyes on them. During summer there will be more shepherds up there, winter in this area at that time of the morning i would think that you need not even worry.

Here is a link to the trip that Chris and I did last year. Fangs Cave is a must to sleep in, there is info in the account.

Hi Deon,

from the summit of Ntonjelana Pass, you stick to the escarpment for a bit, say 200m, but then you need to find your way through a prominent rock band and this will soon force you away from the edge a bit. At the crest of this ridge (its uphill from the pass) you will see a very distinctive bowl-shaped valley. This is best avoided by arcing around it (inland). After that the Saddle will come into view in the distance and you can drop into the next valley and pick up the escarpment edge again as much as you care too. The views from the buttress overlooking the South Saddle (which is actually free-standing) and from the edge of the Saddle itself are well worth it. Near Nguza Pass there is a lovely camp-spot at the river confluence with flat ground and pools. From there head up the summit of Nguza Pass and keep an upward angle as best you can (avoid walking along the main valley) - you get higher and higher and the valley drops away. Eventually you will see a minor yet distinctive summit along the ridge (not the main summit of the dome just North of Nguza) - aim for this and drop into small valley to the right (if you heading toward Rockeries Pass). This is also a nice, quiet little valley. From the slopes of this valley along the escarpment are also fantastic views and often many vultures circling around. Walk down the valley a bit and gradually flip over the last minor ridge separating you from Rockeries Pass.

Look for the Grand Traverse GPS tracks in the downloads section for GPS data since it covers this section.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

If you can get to Mbundini, Rat Hole or Fangs Cave on day 2, then day 3 will be easier. None of the days is impossible but I think the collective will be the challenge. I'd be tempted to carry on along the top from Icidi and head down Fangs or Mnweni or Rockeries.

The difficult bit pyschologically in your plan will be turning right where Fangs meets Mnweni and going back for more up Mnweni Pass. That said, you'll cover the best of Mnweni on those 5 days.....

There is some useful background on Icidi here:
www.vertical-endeavour.com/forum/11-drakensberg-passes/55258-mbundini-pass.html

Most find it to be a tough pass.

By way of encouragment, we made it from Grasscutters, up Icidi Pass to Mbundini Cave by 2pm (with a 4:30ish start).....

Welcome to this forum, travissmcdonald.

That sounds like a more relaxed itinerary. Mbundini and Icidi are both beasts, but Icidi has some humour-stripping bush on the approach. Also the shear length of Icidi, and then intending to traverse across to Rat Hole can be quite a push. Even with Mbundini you will have plenty of action that day, but its way more attainable.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

Near the top of Mbindini and on the south side, you'll pass Mbundini Cave which is a more roomy alternative to Rat Hole. It works well if the wind is not strong. You may need to fetch water from Lesotho though.
