Over the long weekend we stopped by the hut for break. It was a welcoming relief from the heat. What an absolute pleasure to see the hut so neat and clean. There were 1 or 2 damp spots but nothing serious. The front 'window' has been tied with some wire. It definitely is unique and after reading the thread so grateful for the maintenance of the hut.

@hikingle: thanks for the update. I see in your photos that the sheet covering the rear window opening is slightly open in one corner. We will need to secure that since the wind will over time inevitably detach the sheet. Can you please confirm where the damp spots are coming from? Is it from the window openings?

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

@ intrepid The damp spots were directly below the front shutter window. We were camped further down the valley the previous night and around 11pm a strong wind started and by 1pm we were sitting up trying to hold our tent down. The wind only subsided around 4am and then it started to rain...
Don't know if this, along with the gaps in the window could have caused the water to come inside.

The micro climate the mountains generate is quite amazing as we met some hikers coming from the escarpment and they had not experienced any wind or rain the previous night!

Yes, there is a space in the rear opening and after experiencing the wind its bound to get worse.

HI all - does one need to book the hut or is it first come first serve?
If YES then from Cathedral Peak Hotel?
