On 25 September 2024 there was still a lot of snow showing up on the satellite images. I think the south facing gullies will have snow and ice for week or so - maybe longer.
The snow will melt fast on the grassy slopes with a north facing component.
More technical passes which face south will likely be quite tricky for a while.

Some photos from our hike at Giants Castle this past weekend. Arrived on Friday just after 2 in the afternoon as the snow started falling. On our way to Bannerman Hut the snow got heavier, the light started fading faster and navigation became impossible as the path was now completely covered under the thick snow. We decided to set up our tent just over a km from the Hut.
The snow continued through the night and the entire Saturday. Sunday brought sun, blue skies and picture postcard views of the mountains. We decided to pack up and head down (We would be back to climb up Judges Pass)
The way back was slow and exhausting...each step felt twice as hard, not to mention the intense UV exposure.

Hi All, I'm seeing some snow forecasts for this Monday. What's the feeling on us getting some good white stuff?

Hmm, I'm not too convinced of anything decent at this stage. Windy 3-day total snow map for Mon-Wed below (ECMWF Model)
Temps look like they will be mainly above freezing on the escarpment so there will likely be rain as well.

Hi All
Some images from the 19-22 Septemebr snow event. I did a 6 day solo trip to the Mweni area to try an catch some snow. Well I got LOTS of it.
Walked in Thursday, pitched and spent the next two days in the tent waiting out the weather. Friday night was long as I had to try stay awake to clear the tent of falling snow, slept for two hours, and woke to the fabric on my face and a quick need to clear it. Fortunately I could do this from indside, though the next morning needed a 30 minute clearing of the outside which had acumulated during the night. Next few days were spent walking around the area getting some images and then the walk out wiht beautiful views of the mountains covered in snow.
I have all this on my instagram if you wan to to follow me it is karlbeathphotography.
Please enjoy.

Glad you enjoyed them.I also found an overhang/cave while out exploring a side valley.
The valley is the first one that branches off to the left just after you have walked into the Rwanqa Valley, just before the small stream that joins the Rwanqa River. There is a path that runs on the true right and then crosses over and climbs steeply up to the overhang. I didnt go across as I had other things to get to, but looking through the bino's, there were rock wall and a pile of blankets. You can see this clearly from the zoomed in image. I would ay that the outlook would take in Ledgers Cave area.
Also on the slope that I took the image from, just below the rock butress, was a pool of water that was fed from the cliff above. Not sure how mcuh there would have been in there prior to the snow event, but it seemed to be well established. So this then would be Shepherd's Cave number 4. The co-ords of the cave are lat 28°52'18.34"S long 28°59'36.32"E
