Just spoke to the guy in charge of the new cross. It is made and awaiting the return of the fly boys from DRC, and then a date will be set for the erection of the new cross. If you're keen Dion I'll definitely keep you posted.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing. Definitely appropriate for this thread imho.

I wonder if the current condition of the cross is purely due to the elements??

I would think so Viking. I think the design and fabrication of the 1988 cross just couldn't take what the 'Berg threw at it. One of the pics shows the steel base of the 1988 cross, with a sectional sample of the new material over it. Hopefully will be able to withstand better. In hindsight the new cross might have been better off made out of a round section.

The '88 one even had steel cable stays attached at one stage.

It seems that the new cross will be flown up and erected on Thursday afternoon.
If so will take pics and report back.
