Thought I'd add a couple of photos from a recent trip to this thread...

View from the Cave just before sunrise, Natal in mist (although less mist than it was during our ascent of Organ Pipes Pass the previous day!):

View just after sunrise:

Looking South-East towards Cathkin Peak from the summit of Cleft Peak:

Roland's Cave clearly visible in the cliff face, seen from the summit of Cleft Peak:

Roland's Cave just visible from the Hotel:

Thanks so much for your awesome pics! My first Berg hike up to the escarpment was Organ Pipes.

They really, really, really make me want to be there!

My mate put together a video of our hike up to Roland's Cave back in March. Thought I'd share it here...

Great stuff!

I see a rope there on the approach to the cave? Is that there permanently now or was it yours?

Cheers! Going there this weekend!!

There are pitons permanently in place to clip a rope into, but you'll have to carry your own rope up there. I didn't think the rope was necessary, although some of the guys in our group were rather grateful for it!

Awesome, I'm sure you'll love it. I'll be up there again in 2 weeks time.

Hi Warwick

Rolands isn't on the SA Topo 1:50000 maps that I usually use, only the Ndumeni caves.

You can buy one here: www.slingsbymaps.com/drakensberg.aspx – Rolands cave is on the Cathederal peak map (number 2).

Since there are often questions about the little traverse into Roland's Cave, I thought I'd make a short video that'll hopefully make things a bit clearer.
One thing I forgot to put in the video; if you intend using the pitons to put up a rope for safety, your rope needs to be at least 12m long. I imagine most people would carry longer than that, but some people do count the grams per meter
