Wow. Looks like they were on quite a tight budget for those simulations...

New article in the Times on where the AmaZizi stand:

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

So that poll shared on monday still only has 59 votes. About 1 in 3 in favour of the cableway.

I think the lack of interest we seeing in both this poll and the fb poll - as well as the petition - is indicative of how little interest there actually is in a Drakensberg cableway. I wonder if it would actually get 100 000 visitors per year.

Btw - does anyone have access to the number of users on the Moses Mabida arch? It is inexpensive, has a great view and is relatively near an airport in a city that gets a huge number of tourists every summer (over half of KZN's visitors). I would be interested to know if it gets the magical 300 000 p.a. - because if it doesn't, nothing else of its type will.

Here are figures from before the 2010 World Cup; the latest info that is readily accessible. I will try to find more recent data.

So in 6 months 97000 people rode the Moses Mabidha Skycar out of a total pool of tourists to KZN in 2009 of 10 million and 9.257 million in 2010 (Yes, it went down during the World cup because a lot of visitors who usually would have come to KZN on holiday stayed away to keep out of the way of the World Cup Crowd and it is well documented how Durban hospitality was moaning as a result.)

Since 2010 it has continued to decline both international and domestic tourists

2011 8.008 million
2012 7.09 million

Data Source: Stats SA

The Skycar prices in 2014

Adults: R55 per person
Pensioners: R50 per person
Children under 12: R30 per person
Children under 6: Free entry

Thanks - that is a real shocker. That couldn't even get 100k during 2010 in 6 months including peak tourist season.

Remember it was really new and I would expect passenger volumes to increase over time as it becomes known and is marketed. That's why we need to see the figures since then and particularly how they relate to the proportion of the total visitor pool.

Or figures could have declined as the novelty wore off.

The skycar was closed during the World Cup, IIRC FIFA wouldn't allow it, saw it as a security risk
