Drakensberg FKTs - Record of Times
I've only heard about the 2.5 hour number mentioned by Rhinoandhedgehog. This was long ago and I can't even remember where I may have read it or heard it from. I'm not even sure if that was the "up" time or "up and down" time and I remember wondering about this too.kbresler wrote: What is the existing FKT for Cathedral Peak, if any?

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

Ryno Griesel and Ryan Sandes did Rhino in about 2h50 yesterday. Mountain register said they left at 13:30 and saw them get back at 16:20Stijn wrote: Mark Michell broke the Rhino Peak FKT (Drakensberg Gardens Cultural Centre to the summit and back) on 5 July 2015, with a time of 3h 10m 03s, breaking Matt Kretzmann's previous mark of 3h 15m 12s.

After a recent visit I believe this 2.5 hr on Cathedral is possible.Rhinoandhedgehog wrote: I am very surprized that Cathedral Peak is not mentioned here, my father used to say a 2h30 assent was possible with return by morning tea (11h00).I believe this is very achievable. But I would hope to be back by lunch time.
Also worth noting is Tryme Hill Dad said he could do it 30mins thats a very fast time.
Any one with any more info on these two?

Vertical KM's in the Berg - anyone know if there are any established ones?
Having just read about Ryan Sandes' 1h03 on Table Mountain via Indian Venster (which sounds rather slow to me for a 6km course - but I don't know how bad the terrain is, and yes, I have done enough passes to know what 1km vertical is like) - I am just curious about what similar Berg routes there may be that have been established.
I guess the problem is that passes are best suited for this, but would provide a rather arbitrary starting point. A route like Bannerman Hut (2250m) to the top of Sanqebethu (3301m) would probably be a good challenge - but otherwise the start won't fit the route well.

That is very quick for India Venster and starting at the very bottom. The route is typically started from near the cable car station but that saves you about 360 metres of altitude if memory serves me. Awesome route for sure with some steep sections which will slow down anyone. The views are amazing too and it offers so much for the hiker. One of my favourites.

I believe he started at the beach to ensure he had the full 1km. I am just surprised that someone who is as fast as him took so long for a relatively short distance. His average pace is very close to what he did on the Mafadi FKT - and that is 44km, at higher altitude and about 2.7km of altitude gain (notably it does include a lot of downhill as well).
I guess endurance over long distances doesn't necessarily translate into speed over short distances.
