As someone who has a Comrades Green Number, and spent many of my youthful years living in Pietermaritzburg doing road running, I would just like to give some info on Hardy Ballington, mentioned in the posts above and in Reg Pearse's book.
Hardy Ballington is a Comrades Marathon legend, and is one of only 5 men to have won the Comrades Marathon 5 times or more. Most of his 5 wins were in the 1930's. (No woman has ever won the Comrades, but there is only one woman who has won the ladies section 5 or more times.)
So when Hardy posted the Cathedral Peak fkt in 1952, he was probably just doing it for fun, and way past his running prime, something that makes this achievement all the more remarkable.

Apparently there has been some mention of fixed ropes used over the Cathedral Scrambles in this record attempt.... so...... do we accept it?

If fixed ropes are used on these recent records, then the situation is clear to me. Hardy Ballington's record still stands as the fastest unaided ascent and descent of CP.

Kane Reilly did it in 2h15
