Eiger Equipment...
I heard last week from 3 different retailers that they won't be continuing with the brand. I have not spoken to them directly yet.

Interesting stove I came across the other day:

www.biolitestove.com/products/biolite-campstove

Obviously it can only be used in areas where fire and wood collection is allowed, thus limiting its use for hiking and making it more suitable for camping.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

Silverthorne, is that the normal 230g gas canister or those small expensive canisters the JetBoils use?

Gerrit, looks like the bigger 230g canister in the pic.

You might want to purchase the clip on canister feet, No worries over tipping over

these 'legs' improve stability a lot but be warned: there does not seem to be a standard size for these canisters even though they are 100g or 230g (i.e. not all 230g canisters are exactly the same diameter, although they are similar), so the legs/feet you buy need to match the brand of cylinder that you use.

Hi Gerrit that is a 230g canister. I bought a 100g jetboil for R75 from outdoor adventure gear last week and tested the clip on legs and it fits on the inner ring. (The feet have two sizes not seen in the pic.)

PS. I got the 100g canister now everything fits inside the pot

There seems to be a shortage of gas in the canisters for Kovea type stoves, well in Pmb and some of Dbn anyway.
Anyone know whether this is a short term problem, or a phasing out?

Kobus (kbresler) brought this up in one of the posts above on 13 November 2015. Perhaps it is now reflecting in the stores. It really is a pity if it is to be discontinued in SA, as I am very fond of my Kovea Fireman Stove.

Thanks Biomech, I overlooked that....
Indeed a great pity, I have a Kovea Spider, which is a fantastic stove...

Ok here is the answer as I contacted the distributor :)

Kovea is no longer being imported, however if you are talking about screw-thread canisters then there are many options available including Providus, MSR, Jetboil and Sun – all compatible.

All the best

I have had a Kovea Spider for a few years, and am happy with the stove.

One of the features of the stove is that it has a heating coil, which apparently is useful at high altitude, and low temps, when one can invert the gas canister and the stove will still burn.

I have never had to do this, despite some pretty chilly escarpment hikes, the stove has never failed to work.

A guy that I hiked with recently was keen on the stove, but obviously Kovea is no longer available in SA.

So, my question is, has anyone had a stove like the MSR Pocket Rocket, or something similar, fail due to low temps or high altitude, with a butane propane mix? Not just hearsay please..

Cheers

I may not be the best example, but I've had my MSR Pocket Rocket for many years and whilst I have not used it in conditions below zero degrees, it has worked perfectly in single figures and high altitude on the Berg. The issue for me now is that if I fly to the Berg I cannot take this with because airlines won't allow the canisters. Hardly a problem for you though  But then the heavier Dragonfly goes with.
