I don't think we'll sleep in Jo'burg on our arrival, we expect to land early in the morning, then buy immediatly some stuff (ie. gas cartridges) and then take the bus for Harrismith.

Ok - that explains why you are heading to Park Station. I believe it is possible to catch the Gautrain to Midrand and most bus services can pick you up there as well. I am no expert on Jo'burg, but I have caught a bus up there a few times.

There is a Cape Union Mart at OR Thambo airport, but I seem to recall it being inside the international departures terminal. Can anyone confirm this?

Fly in to OR Tambo, Then Gautrain to park station, then bus terminal down to Harrismith.

Between OR Tambo airport and park station, is sandton station. If you arrive in business hours (8am to 5pm) you can pop out at sandton station and get the cartridge then get back to the gautrain to get to the bus at park station. Once at park station keep your belongings under eyes the whole time.

Yes Ghaz, however they dont stock gas cartriges for obvious reasons.

It might be possible to order the cylinder from Mountain Mail Order and get them to send it to Witsieshoek (obviously by prior arrangement with Witsieshoek). You could also order the topo maps from them and get those shipped up there too. Not sure if they will deliver it up there, though.

@Mayake: Sandton City has both Cape Union Mart and Drifters and is quite close to the Sandton Gautrain station. Rosebank Mall is next to the Rosebank Gautrain Station and there is a Cape Union Mart in the mall. Park Station is the Jhb point to catch your bus and is the next stop after Sandton and Rosebank respectively. Both Rosebank and Sandton are quite safe btw. If you're driving then the new Heidelberg mall has a Cape Union Mart and this is probably the last place you get the gas canisters at in Gauteng when travelling to the 'berg by road.
