The Mt Aux Sources - Amphitheatre - Tugela thread

16 Sep 2013 18:36 #58501 by Mr T
Myself and my wife went up last month.

We drove up in our golf 6 TSI and it was terrible.....
Took us ages to get up the hill and rocks didnt make it any easier.

After the hike and getting back down to our accomodation without major mechanical issues, we agreed it was worth while ;)

But am now shopping for a double cab.... :P

Happy hiking guys

We (4 people) are planning on hiking to the Tugela Falls on Saturday (26 April 2014), and want to spend the night. I know the Basotho theft is an issue when camping near the rangers hut.

Can anyone suggest an alternative camping area, and direction how to get there?

I look forward to receiving your replies.

I suggest going over the ridge to the next valley. If you follow the edge of the escarpment you will find 2 great sheltered campsites about 80m from the rivers edge. I've been there 4 times and never seen anyone else in that area. B)

I saw this picture of Devils tooth, but I haven't seen it from the normal chain ladder route last year. Where is this ?

Thats a look out point near the bottom of the zigzags, I think there is even a sign pointing to it

Here is another view of it with a climber doing a Tyrollean traverse.

It is in my book Catching the Light which can be found at this link.

Good news!
They have started grading the road from Witsieshoek Lodge turnoff to the Sentinel carpark and plan to have completed paving it with bricks by the end of June.
