The Mt Aux Sources - Amphitheatre - Tugela thread

We were also expecting it to be dry - hence hauling plenty of water from Bushman's Cave - but I expected to find water within 1km of Mzimude Cave. I wonder what the dryer parts are looking like - Mnweni and Didima specifically. I expect you could do the Thuthumi/Organ Pipes loop with the Camel approach for OP and the Thuthumi Hut approach for Thuthumi Pass and you would not encounter any water on the entire hike.

Just out of interest, the precipitation data from the Shaleburn (Underberg) weather station shows quite sharp downward trend when comparing the May-July totals for the past 4 years:

2011 May-July Total - 63mm
2012 May-July Total - 30mm
2013 May-July Total - 10mm
2014 May-July Total - 3mm

Was up there on Thursday/Friday 25/26 Sept - had to carry extra water with as there was nothing, very dry.

Hey guys!

I need some suggestions. Our last trip we climbed the ladders and spent one night on top and came back down the next.

This time we are spending two nights and I need some suggestions on where we can go on day 1 (after climbing the ladders), where to spend day 2, and then come back day 3.

Any suggestions to keep us busy exploring would be great! :-)

This is my own map and understanding of where the spots are:

Hi all

Thanks for all the info on the thread and the VE Forum.

We plan to do SCP (~6:30) - Chain Ladders - Tugela Falls (and down again) on 26 Dec.

Did it a couple of times way back (>22y), and it is time to show the kids :)

Will report back.

Regards

Pieter

I was there a week ago, it's pretty wet so make sure you have gear to keep you warm and dry. Hope you have better weather than I did...

Hi :)

Im driving up there on tues23dec and going to do tugela falls & mt aux sources on the 24th dec. Would have done it later in dec (26th-30th somewhere) but the ONLY good weather window seems to be 24 & 25 dec...

..so Peiter-ZA i suggest you check your weather reports accurately before you embark.
Im using www.yr.no and for the area i am typing in witsieshoek.
(update: you can even type in sentinal and select southafrica and thats the weather up there)
Currently, there is BIG rain forecast for the 26th, 27th, 28th and 29th, with temperatures no higher than 16.

Question:
1.Any body know about the condition of the sentinel road? Is it still doable in a regular small car if one drives carefully? I drive a Toyota Tazz
2.What condition is the hut at the car park in? Is it still doable or will I be better off in my tent next to my car in the car park?

Little bit late but Thanks anyways.
Will report back soon.
Merry Christmas!

The road to the car park is decent. There are a few sections where you will need to be careful with a Tazz, the road is rutted in some areas and quite stony in others, but generally speaking you'll be fine.

Not sure about the hut at the car park, bank on sleeping in your tent and if the hut is good then that's a bonus...

Yip, we took the road with a Golf GTI a month ago which is low. Couple of sections where you need to go slow but you will be ok.
