December Hiking - Mahai Camp and surrounds

This was our first time camping at this lovely campsite! The stands are huge and ablutions, although old, clean. The short day hikes around the camp are very nice and scenic and the Thukela Gorge hike is a must! It was great to experience the berg "from below". Here are some pics.

That is somewhere on the Tiger Falls walk, right? I remember crossing a river over a bridge like that when I was 7 years old (naturally I remember it being much higher) - I have never done the route again, but want to do it some time. I remember falling into the river just before that spot, and having to walk out in wet clothes. Don't remember much of the walk, but nonetheless it was my first time in the Berg.

Just got back from an awesome little weekend away at Garden Castle. We hiked out to Pillar Cave in the dark on Friday night, climbed Mashai Pass, Rhino Peak, Mlambonja and Matebeng yesterday and then made camp next to the river near the top of Wilson's Pass. This morning we climbed Wilson's Peak to watch the sun rise and then we packed up and descended via Wilson's Pass.
It was a surprisingly chilly night (for February) on top last night, dropping to around 5 degrees. Pleased to also report that there was absolutely no shortage of water around there, streams were flowing abundantly all the way to the top of both passes on both the SA and Lesotho side. The first river crossing on the way to Pillar Cave was actually a bit tricky in almost thigh deep water!
There were shepherds and livestock all over the escarpment plateau, no issues though.

A couple of quick pics:

Pillar Cave early yesterday morning.

The view down Mashai Pass yesterday morning, note the waterfall flowing on the right - no shortage of water at the moment!

Our campsite below Wilson's Peak.

The stunning view from the summit of Wilson's Peak this morning.

This weekend, 6 of us (Fran, Charne, Werner, Gilles, Meghan and yours truly) packed light and did a lekker loop in the Cathedral Peak area. Up Mike's Pass on Friday night, up Tlanyaku Pass to Roland's Cave on Saturday and down Camel Pass on Sunday. We had cloudy but atmospheric views on Saturday and a beautifully clear day on Sunday. To echo all the other comments on here, the Berg is so green and full of water right now - Didima Falls was pumping! Also the first time I have followed the escarpment edge from Tlanyaku Pass to Roland's Cave via Little Saddle and Windsor Castle - very scenic...

Always good to sneak away to the Berg on a random weekend!
