Snow Watch 2011

Looks like tomorrow's weather will be pretty snowy/sleety/rainy most of the day. Having done the Bell Traverse just after a day of snow before, I'd highly recommend you stay away or at least take some rope/gear to protect the dodgy sections.

Normally the scrambles pose no problem for me but on that particular trip it was pretty hairy - powder snow on rock ledges or footgrips requires great care... We even struggled to get up the Bell side of Bugger Gulch Gully with no sign of the usual eroded trail and some icy boulders to surmount.

We are planning to do the Bell Traverse this weekend as well, taking two newbies with us. Have not done the bell traverse for a long time, do you think the rope will be that necessary Stijn?

Quote for the day : Wait for us snow, we are coming :)

I am also thinking about it, will bring a half rope 4 cans and a set of nuts. Better to stay safe and not scare newbies. On a more serious note, please make sure that if you going this weekend you have the equipment, experience, route planning to be safe and come home in one piece. There seemed to be loads of people going this weekend , on this forum and other friends, for what could be some hectic weather.

Hi Guys - yes the Northern Berg is not covered that much - lots on top but from what I can see from Estcourt on a clear day most passes should be fine.

Amazing how quickly Cathedral Peak goes from white to having no snow, both of the following pictures are from today:

It has been pretty warm in Pmb during the day today and yesterday, after the cold windy conditions on Sat... Was pretty convinced the best time to see the snow and enjoy it would be early Sunday morning...

@jonwells: referring to post #3452 in this thread - do you know if the light snowfall did happen? Trying to keep track of how many snowfalls have occurred this year.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

@Intrepid : I dont think it did happen, I was at Garden Castle on that date and it was was totally clear skies when we arrived that evening. I also didnt see any snow change on the sat pics around that date. If it did snow in the morning it would have been so little that it probably couldnt really count as a snow "event"

Snow has closed Van Reenen's Pass again this morning! This winter is the real deal!

Edit- Snow also reported in Nottingham Road, and it looks like schools in Underberg are closed today
