Snow Watch 2016

This is the official thread for Snow Watch 2016. Feel free to post pictures, information, questions and reports about the snow conditions in the Drakensberg for 2016. The idea is to keep track of the snowfalls, pool information about where the snow is for those that want to go see it, and simply to have a place to express the joy and experiences you may have had if you have witnessed the grandeur of the Dragon clothed in white.

2016 Snowfalls:

1. 30 April - First strong cold front of the year brought light snow to the peaks between Tiffindell and Mafadi. There was also some very light snowfall in parts of the KZN Midlands including Underberg, Kokstad and Impendle. Details

2. 8 May - Light snowfall reported at Black Mountains. Satellite image showed some very isolated falls in the far Southern KZN escarpment. Details

3. 10 May - Light dusting reported at Afriski. Details

4. 11 May - Overnight snow falls across the peaks along most of the range. Details

5. 14 May - Reports of light snow on the mountains viewed from Witsieshoek, as well as at Afriski.

6. 25 May - Light snow on the mountains surrounding Tiffindell. There were was also some light, and very isolated snowfalls on the peaks at Bushmen's Nek, and in the interior of Lesotho. Details

7. 11 June - Light dustings on the peaks of the Southern Berg

8. 13-14 June - Good drop of snow across much of the Northern Berg, particularly in the Afriski region and central Lesotho. Light snow falls in the Central and Southern Berg Peaks. There was also some lower altitude snow in places such as Witsieshoek and Golden Gate. Details

9. 2 July - Light snow falls across most of the range, mainly above 2000m, although some flurries were reported in the midlands. Details

10. 16-17 July - Isolated snowfalls on the peaks at the Amphitheatre, Mnweni and Vergelegen. Details

11. 23-28 July - Powerful cut off low system produces huge amount of precipitation over large parts of SA. Heavy snowfalls over the entire Drakensberg escarpment with snow depths up to 80cm reported in places. Snow also fell in the interior of the Eastern Cape, KZN Midlands, much of Lesotho, and in parts of the Free State. Heavy falls were also reported on the high ground of the Western Cape, and Northern Cape. Details

12. 1 August - Approximately 5cm of fresh snow falls across most of the escarpment. Details

13. 17 August - Fresh snowfalls reported at Afriski and Liqhobong.

14. 19-20 August - Snow falls across the peaks of the Southern Drakensberg escarpment

15. 17-18 September - Fresh snow across the entire Drakensberg escarpment. There were also reports of some snowall in the Southern KZN midlands, as well as at Harrismith, and the high ground surrounding Newcastle. Details

16. 2-4 Oct - Snow falls along many of the peaks of the Eastern Cape, and in parts of the Southern and Central KZN escarpment. There was further widespread snowfalls the following evening.
