We saw two guys who were hiking with BergAttie do some serious "bum sliding" down Giants Pass, the one however complained of a serious "wedgie" when we saw them at the bottom !!(excuse the pun) They must have made up at least 30 -45 minutes on us by this technique. I considered it but it just looked too steep and scary.

@Boerkie, not if your mattress is a Thermarest!

@diverian: ja it makes up a lot of time. I haven't needed to do this much in the Berg, but in Canada I use three techniques: standing/skiing but without skis (very dependant on snow quality and slope); squatting and controlling direction and speed with ice axe or collapsed hiking pole (glissades); and lying down with your pack on your back, lifting your bum up and controlling speed by how much you dig your heels in (this method can pick up serious speeds but is probably the most fun!). Problem with the Berg is the snow slopes are rarely consistent enough, and the passes have some serious obstacles.

Just a technical comment about your images. It looks like you may have over sharpened the images for the web. Try doing this if you have photoshop: convert your image to 72dpi with a physical size of about 3000 pixels. Then use filter - sharpen, sharpen and then downscale it to half the pixel size, ie 1500 at 72dpi. You will get a much better looking result, a smooth sharpness if that makes any sense. By the way, what camera are you using?

I have it that "No camping is permitted" at Junction cave? Have this changed or is my info incorrect?

It has occurred to me that you may be talking about the Junction Cave at Ndedema Gorge - this one has rock art and should definitely not be used. The one we used is at Injisuthi and had no rock art.

@Serious Tribe

If you are referring to my images then they were taken with a sony cybershot w290, I decided to leave my canon slr in the car when I woke up and saw the rain on the Saturday morning.

The pictures were taken in landscape scene mode and the only thing I did before posting them was resize them 1024 X 768 using the "send to" - "email recipient".

So what has everyone got planned for the December holidays? It's always inspiring to hear from fellow berg-hikers! :thumbsup:

Me, I'll be doing a 4-day hike in Mnweni (up Fangs, down Rockeries) from 16-19 Dec and a 4-night stay at a cottage in the Drakensberg Gardens area from 27-31 Dec. The now-classic Bollard-Wilson's loop is on the cards as a quick solo day hike during that time... any other suggestions for good day hikes in that area?

A good day hike at Garden Castle (especially to take the family on since its an easy hike and you can really turn around at any time) is Hidden Valley. The hike to the valley is cool so even if you don't reach it, it is still worth doing, its also got some nice pools.

I'm also planning on doing a 4 day hike on 16-19Dec, from Injisuthi up Judge Pass climbing Judge, Corner, POPPLE :) , Mafadi, Injisuthi Dome, Trojan Wall, Lithabalong and Nteledi II (I think thats what that 3400+ peak in Lesotho on that ridge is called). Then coming down Leslie's Pass...

On the 3 to 5th December me and a good mate wanna go up mashai, summit Mlambonja peak, then go across to Rhino peak. After summiting Rhino perhaps spend the night in Mashai Shelter, or if the weathers good just sleep up top. Then take the 2nd day to explore some moere, or go over to Matabeng. And then climb down Mashai and return home. I'm super stoked!
