The upcoming hikes thread
Hi Carl,We will be in Giants whole weekend, more milling about though, no firm plans yet.
We've wintered well, I feel a bit like a chubby seal pup.
Might bump into you somewhere.
Hahaha, all the more stored energy for consumption once you're back

Hi ASL,Hi, I'm really interest in your Day 3 'Gable shortcut' up Elandshoek? We've been considering doing Elandshoek for a while but have little info on it. Have you done it before and could you share any info/ pics you have please?
We've done Elandshoek and the shortcut twice before, this will be the 1st time going up. It is a personal favourite of ours as it provides unique views to both the south (towards Lotheni) and north (Giants). It also feels so different making ones way around the "hoek", even though one cuts it short. The cloud formations and movement across the ridge is also something to behold

Herewith a few pics from our previous trip:
The cross-over is approximately at the point where the clouds drop over the ridge

What is Elandshoek pass like? It doesn't seem like it's used much so is there any path or clear route and what's the general conditions and estimate time we should allow to ascend it? You look fast there so maybe we should add some buffer time...
Also if you have any GPS tracks you could share maybe?

I was scheduled to go on a group hike (up Mweni, down Rockeries) this weekend but withdrew due to the cold front and high winds area - a little more than I might have been able to handle. So, if anyone is doing a multi-day hike roughly over next weekend, I am available from Thursday 25th and need to be back in JHB by Tuesday afternoon (30th). I could really do with with some mountain time and am not really picky about route or area, although I will be travelling from JHB.
If there is a group going out, that I could tag along with, please send me a private message.
Thanks.

I am thinking of doing a hike in the Mnweni area over the September 2023 long weekend.
2 of my regular hiking buddies aren't able to make it, my wife is out as well for this one, so currently it's just me and ASL available for a Berg hike.
I don't go to the berg unless we have a team that is at least 3 people strong, and prefer the group to be no bigger than 5 max, 4 preferable.
Based in Centurion and Woodmead, so if you are near Centurion I can pick you up.
Haven't done Nguza pass in a while, want to go up it, cave on top and go down Christmas pass or Ntonyelana pass. From Supertramp's last write-up the dodgy section appears to be even dodgier than when I last did it, so there is the very real possibility that we won't be able to get to the top of the escarpment if the pass is impassable. Our group does tend to do a fair bit of bushwacking and bundu bashing (we're never lost, just exploring
Our 3 day hikes typically follow the following format: 1 day up, 1 day exploring on the escarpment and 1 day down (well, one morning down as we like to get home before dark). We would leave Jhb at around 4 am, get to the berg at 9am and start hiking at 9H30 - 10am.
We do tend to walk maybe a bit on the faster side and like to walk a bit further than average, but lately not drastically so - haven't done enough berg hikes this year to push hard. We don't mind suffering though, so if you have this kind of mindset and want to join, you are welcome to pm me to discuss.
