@ Intrepid
I don't think ice is inconsistent with this time of the year. Over the last number of years I have experienced ice coverings on rivers and iced waterfalls at the end April/beginning May. I recorded -6 degrees in April 2006 up Menweni and experienced sleet while in Roland cave in April 2007.
Maybe the amount of rain that we have had this year is just allowing a more visible showing of the ice?
The pictures below were taken in April 2007, still iced-up well into the morning.

We slept on the Jeep Track just before the Organ Pipes turn off, last week Wednesday night and my themometer read -4. After all the wind we had, we were expecting a strong cold front to move in - never happend but it was sure cold enough. We could see that the waterfalls in the high berg were mostly frozen as we could only see bright white on the black rock were there were a waterfall the day before.

I just checked with a supplier of mine in that area, she confirms it is cloudy and very cold with snow on the mountains!

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

So, No. 2 for the season, and the first decent one! Off to a good start. Afriski reported heavy snowfall on May 10, with 8cm remaining behind on the ground afterwards. Light dusting between Monks Cowl and Giants Castle was also reported.
Cloud cover lifted sufficiently this morning only, to reveal snow still lying on the ground around Bokong, Afriski, Mafadi-Makheka ridge, and quite a bit in the Sani-Mokhotlong region.

Looks like a chance of snow on Thursday down to about 2300m. I will be hiking at Cobham on the weekend so holding thumbs!

Ja, when I heard of the approaching cold front I was thinking that it will probably snow.

Passed through Lesotho this weekend - plenty of snow remaining on south-facing slopes, and plenty of frozen ground and needle ice as a result of recent rain! Sani top was pretty snow-free, but near Oxbow and Afriski things are rather icy.
