Routes I have in mind (open to others):
- Cathedral Peak (20km)
- Thumb Pass (17km)
- Sani Pass (18km I think)
- Bollard Pass (distance depends of the rest of the route)
- Open to other routes
Carry a 4kg pack (food, water, rain coat and 1st aid), so immense fitness is not required.
Any takers - pm me.

The 4th VE Berg trip will be to the Busingatha, 1-3 March 2014.
The objective of the trip is to get more familiar with the Busingatha Valley and its community, the focus of so much attention currently in the cable car debate.
It will involve a morning's visit to see some of the environmental work being done by the community (such as donga reclamation), as well as a visit to one or two nearby rock art sites.
Thereafter we will hike to Singati Cave and spend two nights there. The in-between day will be spent exploring more of the community nature resverve and wilderness area. We are also considering a day hike from the cave up to the escarpment via the gully coming down from Inner Tower - this option would not be suitable for beginners, and would require a good level of fitness and tolerance for clambering up the gully. Those that prefer the option of chilling at the cave during the day can also do so, depending on what arrangements can be made. As a way of making it possible for more people to attend, those that only have the weekend of March 1-2 available can walk out from the cave after the first night, assuming they are competent enough to find their way back.
The invitation is hereby extended to anyone who is particularly interested in this area, and is concerned and engaged with the cable car debate, to join us. You need to be a reasonably competent hiker to hike to the cave, and must have your own gear and make your own arrangements for food. We will be accompanied by a local hiking guide as well as a rock art custodian, so there will be costs payable towards that - it's a great way to support local initiatives. I will confirm what these costs are.
If you are interested, you are welcome to respond here, or send me PM.

I am planning a weekend away with my gf over valentines, the original idea was to do Tugela Gorge on Sat 15 feb and Sentinel Chain ladder to the top on the 16th of Feb. Sat would have been not too early morning start as I would love to be hot enough to enjoy the pools and the river on the way to the view of the falls, then have lunch there and return to camp for the evening.
The following day would have been an early morning drive to Witsies and to do a day hike to the top of the Amphitheater and back, but now i see that over this specific weekend it is full moon, and i thought, why not get a very early morning start from the car park, have a full moon hike of about 3hours as the moon would be on shedding light on that side of the mountain and be overlooking the drop off at the falls at sunrise, (amazing followed by amazing!) then there is still enough time in the day to make it to the top of Mont Aux Sources and return to the car park.
I would like to know if anyone would be interested in joining??
I dont know of any other full moon hikes over that weekend, but if the weather allows it...why not have my own!
Tips, comments, info, all welcome!

In my experience (limited to finishing hikes late, once at 1AM) - the moon is most impressive early and at this time its like hiking in broad daylight. I imagine that by 3AM it won't be much use to you as a light (i.e. you will need headlamps). The escarpment may look great or may be a large shadow - hard to tell.
Sun rise from the top is always special - I will never forget watching the sun rise from Rolands Cave 2 years ago. With the angle of the Amphitheatre you would want to be on top of the Bilanjil Ridge (not named on the map - look for the spot height on the escarpment edge at 2995m on the Geomaps series map). Its the best lookout over the falls and would give you the background of Beacon Buttress and Sentinel.
Just be very careful - lots of spots you could fall down if its dark. Perhaps only approach the spot after first light. There is a gap between first light and sun rise.

I've been asked to lead a trip with a group of 8 -12 hikers over the weekend of 26-28 April, only 2 night for sleeping out.
I am quite familiar with the Cathedral area and would like to start on top of Mike's Pass (for R40 pp they have a Toyota Condor drop of max 7 at a time - wanted to drive up passed weekend to check out conditions, was refused), hike up Organ Pipes past Fire Lookout and camp near streams behind Cleft, day two to top of Cockade Pass and 3rd day down Cockade and back to hotel.
I haven't done that route recently, so any advice on:
The route - is that route up still fairly easy? I expect first timers in the group.[/li]
Camp site - behind Cleft ok or still too close to main route? I want a spot close to water and close to the edge for the early morning views![/li]
Cockade - I found the paths in the Mjlambonja valley quite overgrown after recent rain, has anyone been down there recently?
And on another topic - my faithful Scarpa SL (bought in UK in 2003) is finally coming apart after many excellent trips. WHERE CAN I FIND DECENT REPLACEMENT BOOTS?
Looking forward to the avalanche of responses...
Regards
H

6-8 people attending so far. Would be nice to have a few more. Come and see what a gem this area is, and what the cable car debate is all about.
