The upcoming hikes thread

Great, thanks.

I recently did the Bannerman hut en cave route so that is my plan-B, but I don't want to do the same route again.

How is the Giants Cave? I see the map says it is a 4 person cave.

Can someone recommend a 3 day hike, with sleeping in caves for both nights?

We are only 4 people, and quite strong hikers.

I am not a fan of caves, so I never really looked at cave routes before...

I'm very keen to do a hike up the Camel to Rolands Cave then go across to Easter Cave for the 2nd night and descend Mlambonja on day 3. These are 2 great caves and you have a few other pass options both up and down...

Hi ASL

Are you doing this Rolands cave route this weekend?

The view from that cave looks amazing! If you aren't going this weekend I think we might change our plans to do Rolands cave 1st night then Easter / Twins cave the 2nd night.

A good route with caves for 2 nights for strong hikers - plenty of options.

How about this for an adventurous one - day 1 up to Gypaetus Cave (around 2600m on Gypaetus Pass), day 2 to Bannerman Cave and day 3 down Langies or one of the Hlubi Passes. Should make for a fun weekend out. If you are slightly less adventurous, switch Gypaetus Cave with Spare Rib Cave on Bannerman Pass.

I have a GPS track for the Gypaetus/South Hlubi loop if you want one.

Oh how I wish I could! But with roughly 600km of hiking in December, I can't get more time off work.

Your best bet is to get hold of one of the mountain guides and see if they can fit you in at short notice.

The Northern High Traverse has some difficulties if you don't know the way, where not to camp etc. There are also a lot of route variations one can chose from. E.g. while the Kubedu Shunt cuts a lot of distance, you miss one of the best views in the entire range (around Ifidi Peak). The Senqu shortcut makes the route a lot quicker and easier, but you miss the Mnweni Cutback. The pass you go down also makes a massive difference - but going right through to Organ Pipes Pass will add a lot of distance.

My point being - don't underestimate the route.

There is a thread about this route somewhere on the site.
