The upcoming hikes thread

Hey all:

Is anyone planning a hike for the Youth Day weekend (16 June)? My sister has organized a trip to South America later this year, and she'll be doing a hike there to an altitude of about 4,500m, so she'd like to do a bit of training before she leaves. I think she'd be able to manage a three-day hike with a shortish approach - something in the Didima region would be good, or if there's anything similar in the Southern Berg, I'd be very interested in exploring that area. She's slightly anxious about going only as 2, however, after the recent attack in the Mnweni, so would anyone like to join us, or is anyone already planning a hike who wouldn't mind some company?

To the people going to the Drakensberg this weekend, it's going to be awesome, but very cold! You better pack your warmest clothes! I see at the vultures retreat weather station it is pretty cold, and that is without the wind-chill factor. Enjoy!

Hi All

Can anyone recommend a 3 day route where we can sleep in caves for the 2 nights? There are quite a few when I look at the Drakensburg maps. But I know there a nice and not so nice caves. Any recommendations?

I recently saw a picture from Roland's cave, and the view looks amazing, so I want to leave my heavy tent behind and do a nice cave hopping trip.

Up mnweni and down rockeries this weekend. Plan to stay at base of pass on Friday night, then Mponj cave on Sat and back home Sunday. Definitely going to bring tents and might even pitch them in Mponj if its that cold. Hope my sleeping bag is up to scratch!

Could easily get that cold, especially if there is still snow around. 10 days ago we camped out 1km south of Leslies pass and it was -7 deg C at 6am, and this was without taking windchill into account. Would advise taking a warm sleeping bag and mat/sleeping pad with good insulation along :-)

Hi Guys. Elinda and myself are doing a 5 day hike in the Mnweni area from Sat 9th to Wed 13th. It will be the classic route, up Rockeries and down Mnweni and invite those who want to join us. It will be a photographic hike so we wont rush and will do shorter days with a full day on the escarpment. 1st night will be in Sunshine Cave, 2nd night in Mponjwane Cave, 3rd night in Ledgers Cave and 4th night in Five Star Cave. We will take tents as we always do when going to the escarpment. You can email me at: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
