As of 8/11/2015, the situation at KBC and the walk in via Sphinx and BMC remains as per the earlier posts.

Cockade Pass: water till the Xeni split
Bell Traverse: river above pass is flowing nicely, Twins Cave is dry, there are 3 drips on the route, but all are very slow so not much use.

If the weather forecast is to be believed, there should be some nice rain in the KBC area leading up to our trip last weekend of Nov...please let it be so.

Hey. I'm hoping to go up Cockade this weekend, then across the escarpment to Twins Cave. Is there somewhere to fill up in the Kwakwatsi valley?

Hi Dave,

Welcome to VE. ghaznavid's post above relects 'river above pass is flowing nicely', which refers to the Kwakwatsi. Shouldn't be any problem finding water in the Kwakwatsi opposite the top of Mlambonja Pass, and even higher upstream towards Elephant.

Ah. Thanks Tony. I haven't done the Bell Traverse, so I didn't know if ghaznavid was referring to quite the same area. Anyhow, thanks again.

We were up at Ifidi cave over the weekend.
The berg is very very dry! Tugela not running at all and almost no standing water.

We did however find standing water up the river approaching Ifidi which was good enough to boil and drink. On the 7th of Nov we had a big storm come through which dropped I estimate 1-2cm of rain, but it was very localised.

Longer trips through the berg might be difficult at the moment due to the water on the escarpment.

There is enough water upstairs for a GT. But expect to drink some water from pools instead of flowing streams.

One of the tarns behind Tarn Cave yesterday:

I might be able to get a hike report up later today, but not sure if I'll have a chance. Basic summary, we "punched a bird" (hint: Ngwanwe is a pied starling), found a cave and opened a possible new pass, 41km. Andrew is running up Mashia Pass right now, you can watch his progress on his tracking site.
