I climbed Swaartkop today especially to see the snow. How disappointing! You can see from Redi to Cathkin and it was fairly clear - but no snow in sight at all.

Probably the last time I will be climbing Swaartkop though - we walked across the top to do some bouldering on the rocks on the far side, as I took my pack off I turned around to put it down and saw 3 teens quickly ducking in the long grass. I told Hobbit we need to get going, they followed us the entire way to the path down (I kept looking back to see how far behind us they were - they knew we had seen them). Naturally I was praying as I went. On the path down they started throwing rocks at us. Fortunately their aim was terrible and they were too cowardly to get close enough to get a good throw in. When we were past the overgrown bit they stopped following us and switched to shouting obscenities at us. Fortunately we were both ok, but not a nice experience.

No snow in Cathedral area this weekend. Although Saturday night looked very promising with black clouds overhead and big drop in temperature. The south side of Cleft peak is still snow covered from two weeks ago.

We were at Vergelegen over the long weekend, May 1-5. Large patches of old snow still lying on high-lying southern slopes.

Pic below of Thabana Ntlenyana, taken from its southern satellite summit:

Next pic is from the summit of Thaban Ntlenyana, looking onto neighbouring Thaba Putsoa. The Trojan Wall-Mafadi-Makheka ridge visible in the background was still thickly covered in snow.

This shot from kaNtuba Pass of the snow on the slopes of kaNtuba Buttress:

The weather was mostly really good. On the morning of May 4th some clouds had moved in, which eventually enveloped us totally half-way down kaNtuba Pass during the day, which persisted as thick, slightly drizzly mist until evening when the stars started re-appearing. Next morning was totally clear, revealing no new snow in the area. There was very slight "kapok" type snowfall on the summit of kaNtuba Buttress above 3300m on the morning of the 4th, but hardly worth mentioning.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

Snowfall No.4 took place on Saturday, May 4th. Based on the sat image from the 5th, this occurred on the Eastern Cape Drakensberg, particularly in the southern extremities, as well as the tail-end of the Central Range of Lesotho. No reports of fresh snow in the KZN Drakensberg.

Here is the current snow forecast for this weekend. Light snow (2-6cm) is predicted to fall mainly tonight, with a small amount in the far north tomorrow. With freezing levels around 3100m, snow is unlikely to fall below 2800m.
