The upcoming hikes thread
I'd really like to do a Winter 'berg hike, especially with people more experienced than myself (especially with Sabine, so she can teach me her Ultra lite tips)

For a start I am keen to hike in July and August and first prize would be to connect with some snowfall. Snow camping is my best! Aux and I have already spoken about August but haven't confirmed a date. He is well over 6ft and plows snow very nicely.
I was very jealous of Sabine last year on her Mweni hike as she had great snow. Aux and I did find some thigh deep cover on top of the chain ladders and superb accomodation at Crows Nest cave (SA's highest I think at 3222m) in August. The Tugela was iced over completely too.
Anyway I am up for suggestions if anyone is burning to do something? I would also like to connect with some JHB travellers so that I don't end up driving alone all the time.

I think the highest in SA is Upper Injisuthi Cave, but I'm not 100% sure.
That recommendation of Twins Cave sounded great, it sleeps 12, would be awesome if we could fill a car from PMB/Durban and one from Jo'burg
I would push for combining it with Bell Traverse, but I don't know how safe BT is on snow/ice.

To ASL - can't remember what happened to you when we did Bannermans\Langalibalele hike in September but you kept cancelling. That was the hike of a life time! Hope to be able to repeat it this year.
I am planning a hike in Injasuthi at the end of June, beginning July. I will be on midterm break, so have longer than just a weekend to play around with. On the other hand, I broke my right toe end of February, so haven't been hiking at all, have had complications but finally can see the light at the end of the tunnel and hope to be hiking at the end of the month. What I am trying to say is that I am not sure how strong my foot will cope and I will be taking it easy, but this is what I have planned:
Drive down to Injasuthi on Friday, 28 June.
Saturday hike past Marble Baths to the base of Leslies Pass.
Sunday hike up the pass to somewhere below Upper Injasuthi cave.
Monday hike across to Bannermans pass
Tuesday climb down Bannermans and walk along contour path to about Centenery hut
Wednesday back to Injasuthi camp
I have one person joining me so far. Anyone got the time to join us?

I'm afraid the same applies to this one though! I am taking the family on a beach holiday on the north coast from 26 to 29 June and we have already booked accommodation.
I think the secret to this is advance planning... I will confirm a list of available weekends through to September and then we can see where its possible to schedule activity.

VE's rules are to promote the Berg and to facilitate and encourage interaction and co-operation among the community of those who go there...so sounds fine to me.ASL wrote: I don't know what the site rules are but we could also use the forum to introduce members and co-ordinate/ schedule hikes?
The idea of this kind of a thread has been touched on before and I think by the response here it would be a good thing to get going. There already is a broad "Notice Board" category on the forum that caters, amongst other things, for those wanting to advertise or join a trip. However I'm looking for specific input here from members in how they would like to use this site to achieve all of this. This includes how relevant threads are to be managed, and even if any new features/software would be beneficial. There is some sort of event/calendar software that would plug into the existing software, and VE's Facebook page can also be used for event creation.
I am hearing three different ideas/wishes in this thread so far:
1. A general "who is doing what, when" list for the sake of interest
2. A place to advertise trips or to say you are looking for a trip
3. A place to plan and co-ordinate the trips
How does everyone want this to be managed specifically? All in one thread? Split up into two or three threads (1 and 2 could go together)? Its easy to create more categories as needed. If people want to use the forum to plan and co-ordinate a specific trip, then we would periodically just archive these posts sometime after the event has happened. Ive noted the idea about mailing lists...will have to think about that one a bit. Using the forum might just be easier.
Another question I have: is this idea focused on the Berg specifically, or should it oriented more around the users of this forum and thus be open for trips into other areas too?
Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

If threads are split I can see them going off at a tangent & ending up discussing things belonging in the other threads. As for your point 3, I would think that once members have expressed their interest in a hike the planning can take place off the forum via email or something. So I think 1 & 2 can be in the same thread
Could the user's location be displayed under their username instead of having to go into profiles, would make seeing who is in your area a lot easier

I'm not sure how you feel about opening up a bit more to include other hiking options.
Eg I would love to do a day hike this weekend at some point, since I don't have a trip planned. Even though day trips near Gauteng may not be everyone's cup of tea, it would be cool to meet the people

Thanks! It would be much appreciated.Sabine wrote: To Joshilewis - I will gladly unpack your backpack and inspect your stuff, you will be amazed at how much you can leave at home!!
At least then I might be able to keep up with you!Sabine wrote: On the other hand, I broke my right toe end of February, so haven't been hiking at all, have had complications but finally can see the light at the end of the tunnel and hope to be hiking at the end of the month. I might be able to, though it might be a hard sell. I'll see if I can organise it.Sabine wrote: I have one person joining me so far. Anyone got the time to join us?
