The upcoming hikes thread

One upcoming hike I committed to my calendar a few month ago, and I hope to do (partially because its really tough but should be really worth it) - 24 August I'm aiming to do Giant's Castle via Giant's Pass and Giant's Ridge in a day. Camp in the car park the night before, be on the trail by 4AM and try to be back by 8PM.

The hike is open to anyone insane enough to join me

I may be but then I want to run it, not hike - using trail running shoes and a very light pack we could run all the flats and cruise up the hills? What is the actual distance?

I will be carrying a day pack with food, water, raincoat, emergency stuff and a headlamp only - about 6kg. Its 15km to the escarpment and a further 2km to the summit itself. So 34km total, with 1.8km in altitude gain.

The goal would be to reach the pass by 7AM, escarpment by 10, have lunch at around 12:30 on the 3314m summit.

We are a party of 4 heading from sentinel carpark @ 6pm on Friday to crows nest cave and Saturday to Ifidi cave.

Looks like we'll get snow

Aux and I are planning a mission for the long weekend starting 8 August. So far we are 5 people and our destination is probable Central or North Berg to camp in the snow (we hope it will fall first) on top of the escarpment.

One of our party is a photographer who aims to photograph the meteor shower which is predicted...

Maybe I'll bump into you guys - we're spending the Women's Day long weekend at Ihophe Cottage near Drakensberg Boys. Depending on the snow level, I'm planning for a shot at the Mafadi record and perhaps a long trail run along the Mhlwazini, Didima Gorge and Eastman's Contour Path. The Berg is usually crawling with VE members on that specific weekend, so I'm sure there will be many chance encounters.

I might look at trying one of my new prospective passes at Giant's Castle that weekend, or maybe shoot for Uklebe Pass seeing as Lotheni Passes have eluded me for so long.
