The upcoming hikes thread
I did a backpack trail in the KNP a few years ago and it is a brilliant experience. Not the most strenuous hiking, but true wilderness, and very different to other trails.
I'd really like to do another trail soon, but as usual, I struggle to get a group together.

Why don't you check the Johburg hiking club website, they have day hikes every Sunday: www.jhbhiking.co.za

I do/have, but I don't always enjoy the club hikes, and the hike this Sunday doesn't appeal to me to be honestSabine wrote:

I don't see any reason why this would have to be Berg trips only.
@Joshilewis: I'm keen to hit Kruger some time. Hluhluwe-Umfolozi also sounds fun.

Can do it, but maybe not everyone likes that being public? You can do a member search based on city though. There is also the option of giving members a free text area which would be displayed under their avatar in the forum.Smurfatefrog wrote: Could the user's location be displayed under their username instead of having to go into profiles, would make seeing who is in your area a lot easier
Essentially VE can be used as a platform for any area. Anything can be posted in the General section and if I notice a growing interest in a certain topic or area, I will cater more for this by creating more categories etc.joshilewis wrote: I'm not sure how you feel about opening up a bit more to include other hiking options.
OK, based on the responses, I will make this the official thread for announcing trips, either just as a way of sharing what you're up to and/or as a way of advertising for others to join you. I have moved to the Notice Board category, to make it broader than just for the Berg. Depending on how this thread goes I may make changes at a later stage. Please keep this thread for brief updates about your trip. Technical info and discussion about the route etc should happen in other threads where relevant, and write-ups afterwards should go to the Drakensberg or Lesotho Trips categories, if applicable. If you would like to create a dedicated thread to plan more logistical details about your trip and keep others informed, you may do so. I think the Notice Board category is best for this too. I will monitor how this is used and may make changes to facilitate this better later.
Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

- Sentinel Standard Route
- Day trip south on the Amphitheatre, shooting for Mount Amery and Mont Aux Sources as well as some less important khulus, maybe Bilanjil Bump etc
- Day trip north to do some Free State peaks (mainly Namahadi)
I'm interested to see how many people are interested in joining. It will be either August or September, maybe on the long weekend of 9 August or the 24 September long weekend (with the monday taken off work).

Maybe an option to make this field public would solve this? The info is accessible anyway, if someone doesn't want their location to be known they could always use a name like "withheld" for their city.

Are there any people from Gauteng looking to do a berg hike in July? I also want to start organising things so that we don't have to travel alone.
I propose a simple approach:
- Someone Proposes a hike (there could be counter offers?
- then someone volunteers to join (or seconds the hike)
- Once we have agreed a proposed hike and date option(s)
- then others can join and detailed arrangements can be settled via email (or an online system of choice)
I am keen to hike up to the escarpment and don't mind taking off work on a Friday to return Sunday. Injasuthi is an area I haven't really hike so that would be my best option but I'm open to other suggestions if you have a bee to do something.
PS. I need to check with Local government as to which weekends will work but for now its flexible.
