Put on 24 raincoats
Technically you can't have a team of more than 12 aside from the National Hikingway.
Didima is generally less likely to have rain than the chain ladders, but if it rains the entire weekend, I don't think Didima will be spared. It really depends on thunderstorm vs all day rain, and if the team is ok with walking in the rain. Sometimes it is fun to sit in a cave and play cards while it rains outside, but it really depends on the team.

Going for our (me & my wife) first ever overnight hike in the berg next week. (Wanted to do this back in Oct 2011 - totally procrastinated
)
So we are super amped!
Here is the plan:
1. Overnight at Witsieshoek Wednesday.
1. Thursday: Take shuttle & leave Sentinel car park at 8am - climb to the escarpment via chain ladders.
2. See how we feel and maybe climb Mont-Aux sources or explore the views from the Tugela valley (never hiked/climbed at this altitude)
3. Move to Ribbon Falls / Mt Amery area & set up camp for the night.
4. Friday: On our way back check out Beacon Buttress then head down via chain ladders back to car park for Witsieshoek shuttle.

Cool
may see you there: we (group of 7) will be leaving Sentinel CP at 6am on Thursday (hopefully), dropping down into the valleys in front of Sentinel and traversing across to go up Namahadi Pass, camping on the escarpment near the top of the pass for the night. Friday we hope to summit Namahadi Peak and Mont-aux-sources, possibly also Mt Amery, hoping to make Ifidi Cave for the night. Then Saturday back along the top of the escarpment to the Tugela Falls and back to the Car Park via Chain Ladders by late afternoon.

Hi Gerrit,
Xeni Cave is huge and you could probably fit 24 in there, with very few in uncomfortable locations.
Hi Louis,
If you're going to check out Beacon Buttress, you might as well make a bit of a circular route out of it and descend back down to the Sentinel - Chain ladder path via Beacon Buttress gully.
Enjoy your hikes guys.

Agree with Tony's suggestion. Don't let my recent ramblings about loose scree in the Beacon Buttress Gully put you off, its not that bad and in any case, there is no vertical exposure if you do take a short slide. Nothing technical about it, go for it.
You can even consider going up this way. From the bottom is looks a bit daunting to some, but it really isn't.

Random stats and waffling hidden in a spoiler for those who don't like lists:
Warning: Spoiler!
This would finally get me closer to my goal of 100% of all KZN High Berg Passes south of Rhino Peak. There are 20 and I have been on 11 since ticking off the north gully of South Mzimude Pass earlier this year.
The 20 passes would be:
1) Mashai Pass (first pass I ever did, also one of 3 passes I have done 4 or more times)
2) Wilson's Pass (Dec 2013)
3) Bollard Pass
4) Tsepeng Pass (Dec 2012)
5) North Mzimude Pass
6) South Mzimude Pass North Gully (July 2014)
7) South Mzimude Pass Central Gully
8) South Mzimude Pass South Gully (Dec 2013)
9) Walkers Pass North Route
10) Walkers Pass South Route
11) Isicutula Pass (April 2012)
12) Saddle Nek Pass (July 2014)
13) Ngwangwane Pass (July 2012)
14) Thamathu Pass (April 2012)
15) Lammagier Cave Pass (Feb 2014)
16) Knuckles Traverse Pass (Feb 2014)
17) Knuckles North Pass
18) Knuckles North Middle Pass
19) Knuckles South Middle Pass
20) Knuckles South Pass
Tarn Cave Pass, Bushman's Nek Pass and Jonathan's Gate Pass all top out in Sandstone and are therefore Small Berg Passes. I have only done Tarn Cave Pass out of those 3.

Hey all. New here, loving the forum, great people
We are 4 people going to the Drakensberg 21 -23 November. Sleeping in the Mountain 21st and 22nd and back the 23rd to JHB.
If anyone wants to join let us know please
I also really need some suggestions! I have done one overnight trip up the chain ladders and back the next day camping at Tugela Falls and it was amazing.
Could you please help suggest a two night route, maybe not coming back the same route if possible.
I am not familiar with all the site names and I am struggling to find a map that could point out all the places from the Northern to Southern regions, any advice on that would also be appreciated allot.
Thanking you in advance!

Welcome Wesley!
Coming from JHB you'll probably want to stick to the Northern berg which is closer, I'd suggest either Cathedral Peak/Didima or Monks Cowl.
berg.co.za is very useful in this regard www.berg.co.za/cavesindex.htm
Are you guys looking at going up a pass onto the escarpment or stay in lower berg caves?

Thank you!
We would like go onto the escarpment and stay there preferably as our last camp spot at Tugela was amazing.
I was thinking:
Day1 : Up the ladders camp at Tugela
Day2: Go further past Tugela and find a camp spot (maybe a cave if possible)
Day3: Come back down early.
But coming back down from camp 2 on day 3 would probably be too far away to make it back in one day, as the only place I know for parking is at Witsies, so trying to work around that?
I would love to see some pools, maybe sleep in a cave with our tents, definitely be at the top, and not sleep in the same spot twice while doing some more hiking on day 2 towards the second camping place.
Thank you
