A group of four of us are planning on spending New Years Eve in the valley directly under the Red Wall and will do some exploration the next day in the immediate area - we are hoping for clear weather and some great photographs!

Good luck for your GT, Ghaz and Hobbit - how long are you planning on it taking?

Thanks. We are taking 15 days. Somehow extra days keep getting added, at some point it was going to be an 8 day GT!

We are starting very slowly, simply due to it making logistics easier. Might go slightly faster and spend a day chilling somewhere.

Papa Dragon's hike (18-21 December) has 6 potential participants, none of whom I think have met/hiked together before ; should be interesting

Thank you for those good wishes Johann. It seems its not difficult running into other VE in the Berg these days, so hopefully this will be your experience soon too.

Indeed, please be safe on the roads everyone and enjoy your Christmas break. I will think fondly of the Berg as this is first time in a long while that I wont be there during this period.

We have had incredibly heavy snowfall in our mountains on this side for the last week or two (heavy rain down in the cities). Mixed with strong winds and intermittent warm periods, the avalanche warnings have been very strong. We were going to be out there this weekend but it looks like it will be postponed because of the weather. At least a snowy hike or climb, or ski, can all be a day trip for me. Still miss the Berg!

This site will enter it's 9th year next year. Thank again to everyone for making VE what it is! Synergy is the creation of a whole that is greater than the simple sum of its parts - the meaning of this hits home for me on this site.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

So who else is out hiking over the holidays?

I'm doing a 4 day Fangs - Rockeries loop from boxing day.

@Intrepid - Are you practicing your snow-cave building?
