I won't say any more, details coming in an upcoming hike report to be called "the smoking dragon"...

Looking forward to hearing how you survived Saturday night's winds...

Late on Friday the forecast had changed a bit to only include Snow for the far southern Berg. So I was a little surprised to see this pic of Witsieshoek yesterday on the Snow Report SA page:

Just for interest sake, Underberg was -9°C this morning.

This was the view looking down on the Bushman's Nek border post from the ridge near Tarn Cave at about 8am yesterday morning.

This was the scene near the top of Bushman's Pass about an hour and a half later. Wind was extremely high. The snow was bouncing horizontally across the surface when the front first arrived. It must have been fairly deep later on in the day as it was still snowing near Underberg in the early afternoon.

Although there was widespread snowfall yesterday, much of it was very light and would have melted very quickly. Nevertheless a fair amount is still visible on todays satellite image. Interesting that south of Bushmans Nek, some snow has lasted into today, even at 1850m.

Hi Jon, how do you get to this snow satellite image website? Is it directly in Google Earth or some other websites such as showing MODIS satellite data?

Some lovely pics of the snow at Witsieshoek on their Facebook page .

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

I love to hike in the snow and camp on it...

Can we get some predictions as to the best weekends to hike between now and September?

PS. I don't need it to fall on me while I'm there although that is ideal. It's also great if there is a thick covering and we go in as soon as possible (what I normally do is hike straight after a big fall happens)

I would say the biggest snowfall usually happen from late July to Mid September. Not something you could plan in advance though, you would need to keep an eye on the forecasts.
